FAQ

Why didn’t I get an alert, and can I control them?

Most missing alerts have a plain reason: the baseline was still running, the finding was already there, or the next check had not run yet.

An alert is sent only after a scheduled check finds a link that is newly flagged or has become more serious, and only once the first full pass has finished. If nothing arrived, the usual reasons are that the baseline was still running, the finding was already there, alerts are off for the site, or the next check has not read that page yet.

Check these, in this order

  1. Has the first full pass finished? While it runs, which can take several checks on a large site, no alert is sent. The “now watching” email marks the end.
  2. Was the link already flagged then? Findings present at the baseline are recorded as the starting point, and appear in the report and the first email, not as alerts.
  3. Are alerts on for this site? The Alerts on button on the Monitoring page turns alert and summary emails on or off for each site. Monitoring keeps running either way.
  4. Did you ignore it? Ignored findings are left out unless they get more serious. See can I ignore a finding.
  5. Has a check read that page since the change? Checks run on a schedule. A page whose sitemap date did not change may wait for the rotating slice or the monthly pass.
  6. Is it in your spam folder? Alerts go to the email address you sign in with.

The emails monitoring can send

EmailSent when
New-issue alertA check finds a newly flagged link, or one that has become more serious. One email for the whole check, listing up to 10.
Link-marker alertA link that was marked nofollow, sponsored or ugc no longer is, so it now passes ranking credit.
Domain expiry warningA domain you link to comes within 30 days of running out, and again within 7. Once for each stage.
First summaryThe first full pass finishes. Sent once.
Weekly summaryA full check finishes and no email has gone about the site for about 7 days. It says whether anything is new.
Trial endedA free trial finishes. Sent once.

What you can control

  • Alerts on or off, for each monitored site. Every alert email links to the Monitoring page where the button is.
  • Which findings count. Ignore a link you have checked and it stops counting and alerting.
  • Where they go. Not yet changeable: alerts go to the address you sign in with, so they cannot be sent to a client or colleague. Share a report instead.
  • Scan-complete emails cannot be turned off yet.

Questions

Why did I get a summary but no alert?

The summary is a note that monitoring is still running. It is sent when a full check finishes and no email has gone about the site for about 7 days, and it says nothing new was found or how many flagged links are open.

Is there one email for every new link?

No. One alert is sent per check, listing up to 10 findings with the most serious first. A check that finds five new links sends one email.

How do I tell that monitoring is still running?

Look at the site’s status on the Monitoring page. All clear or a flagged count means the last full check ran. Couldn’t check means the sitemap could not be read, and it is tried again the next day.

Set alerts the way you want them

Open the Monitoring page to see each site’s status and its alert switch.
